JUNK 2025 – Porter Springs Nevada

It’s time to plan your JUNK trip! This year Julia’s Unequivocal Nevada Klampout will be held on the 22, 23, and 24 of August at the unique and awesome Porter Springs Recreation Area just north-east of beautiful downtown Lovelock Nevada (ok, it’s a bit of a drive, but it’s an easy drive)!

We’ll be doing the normal JUNK activities (camping, cooking, drinking, history, exploring, cook competition, auction) and the Saturday History Run will include a visit to Tunnel Camp and 7-Troughs, which is a short 30 minute trip from the camp site.
The 640-acre Porter Springs Recreation Area has a long history of use by Native Americans, explorers and 20th century miners who lived at the site and milled tungsten from a nearby mine. The recreation area includes natural springs, a pond, shade and fruit trees and a rich riparian habitat that draws over 130 species of birds and other wildlife.
A fence has been installed around the main part of the recreation area in order to protect the rich riparian habitat and shade trees that make this area an oasis in the desert. There are picnic tables and fire rings within the fenced area and walk-in tent camping is allowed.
Outside the fence, a vault toilet, gravel parking area, picnic tables and fire rings have been installed and vehicle camping is allowed. Interpretive signs have also been installed explaining the rich natural and cultural values and recreation opportunities in this small but beautiful jewel in the desert.
- Enjoy a historical tour of Tunnel Camp and 7-Troughs and related areas on Saturday.
- Participate in the raucous and tasty dinner cooking contest where the judges are bound by honor to eat what you place before them!
- Blow your retirement funds at the always enjoyable auction filled with bargains, bobbles, flotsam and jetsam on Saturday evening, hosted by the ever fair JUNK Master Short Round. Note: Clean out your garage, shed, attic, and under your bed items and donate them for auction – which greatly benefits JCB.
Remember, there is no common kitchen or bar at this event – so BYOE (Bring Your Own Everything) with enough shareable grub and booze for the moron camped next to you (likely named Metric) who forgot everything.
Rub is $20 if you’re a virgin JUNK’r, $15 for clampers that have already seen the elephant (unless you’re an actual virgin, in which case please talk to Short Round about participating in the auction and we’ll see what we can do to rectify that sad condition).
If you have reasonable driving skills you can reach the campsite in virtually any vehicle (shabby truck to highfaluting RV, even Harley’s blue Cherokee). There is an actual vault toilet at the sight, but sadly no bidet so bring an old squeeze bottle if you roll that way.
From wherever you’re coming from, get to Lovelock, Nevada. Then…
- Head northwest on Main Street toward W Broadway
- Turn right onto Central Ave
- Continue onto NV-398 N/N Meridian Rd
- Turn left onto NV-399 W and drive about 12 miles
- Turn right onto 7-Troughs Rd and drive about 5.3 miles
- Take a slight left, then in about 2.9 miles take a slight right, then in about 1.5 miles take a slight left.
- Turn left on 7-Troughs Rd and keep going for about 8 miles and you should be there…

Note: Some brothers, who are fanatical JUNK’ers, will be heading out to the site on Wednesday and/or Thursday, so feel free to go early. Also, this particular weekend is the beginning of Burning Man, so it’s possible Burners will be camping at Porter Springs in advance of the start of that dull affair. Don’t worry, they’ll likely be friendly enough…
Satisfactory!
